Building the Waldo Tunnel

Feb. 28, 1954: Crews dynamite through the second bore of the Waldo Tunnel, revealing the fantastic view that generations since have enjoyed. It's not a surprise that it was captured so well by Art Frisch, a 40-year Chronicle photographer and editor who had a knack for interesting angles. The Waldo tunnel opened later in 1954. The rainbow was painted on the tunnel in the 1970s.åÊ
